The Polaroid guide: films, cameras and care

One frame, one original, in your hand in minutes. How to get Polaroids right.

Written by Arch Club. Arch Club sells Polaroids from its sittings for $111 each.

Know your film

FilmWorks in
i-Typei-Type cameras such as the Now and I-2
600600 cameras, and i-Type cameras too
SX-70SX-70 cameras; slower film for bright light
GoPolaroid Go cameras only

600 film carries a battery in each pack, which is why it works in older cameras; i-Type film doesn't, so it needs a camera with its own battery. Fujifilm Instax is a separate, smaller system.

Getting good results

I
Shield it from light.A fresh print is light sensitive as it ejects. Let it come out into shade and lay it face down while it develops.
II
Don't shake it.Shaking does nothing good and can disturb the chemistry.
III
Mind the temperature. In cold weather prints come out pale and bluish; in heat, warm and yellow. Develop near room temperature, in a pocket if needed.
IV
Give it time.Colour images take several minutes to settle fully.
V
Keep film cool.Store packs in the fridge and let them warm up before use.
